At just twenty-five, Dame Laura Lee made a decision that would shape the next thirty years of her life. She left the NHS to help bring her then patient, Maggie Keswick Jencks’ vision into reality. What began as a relationship between nurse and patient gradually became something much richer. A thirty-year Capstone for Laura. There was no established organisation, no proven funding model and no certainty that it would succeed. There was simply an idea that felt too important to ignore. Laura still carries the vision and Maggie’s as an organisation is still ‘Marching On’.

Château du Rayet sits close to the medieval bastide of Villeréal, where the landscapes of Lot-et-Garonne and historic Périgord meet. The countryside unfolds gently rather than dramatically. The building has stood for centuries, the surrounding landscape has changed remarkably little, and life still follows rhythms that would be instantly recognisable to those who lived here generations ago. That was the opportunity Gareth and Becky Rees recognised when they first discovered Château du Rayet. More than a beautiful château, they had found a timeless corner of rural France in which to create their family Capstone for generations to come.
